MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s soccer player Laura Kane has made the list of potential U-21 National Team members for 2005.
Kane, who finished her Mountaineer career this past fall, is one of 40 women between the ages of 19 and 21 chosen by U-21 National Team coach Greg Ryan as potential candidates for his 2005 squad.
Ryan will hold two camps before making his final selections.
Kane is the fourth WVU player selected to the U-21 pool in the past five years. Former WVU All-Americans Katie Barnes (2001), Chrissie Abbott (2002) and Lisa Stoia (2002) were also chosen.
In 2001, Barnes helped guide the U.S. squad to the Nordic Cup title. The Nordic Cup is held each year in July and is the major event for U-21 teams across the world.
“This is a credit to Kane’s hard work and development over the past four years,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown of the Pottstown, Pa., native’s selection. “She’s the fourth WVU player to make the pool and we’re proud of everything she has done. I believe this a great reflection of what WVU can do to help a person reach her goals.”
Kane was a four-year starter for the Mountaineers, earning All-America accolades in 2004 after leading West Virginia to its fifth-straight NCAA tournament appearance. She ended her career in third place on the WVU all-time goals, assists and points lists.
