BLACKSBURG, Va. – The West Virginia University men’s swimming and diving team fell to Virginia Tech 144-94, while the women lost 141-86 to the Hokies on Saturday, Jan. 22, in Blacksburg, Va.
“I think that the meet was a good learning experience for us to have to swim after a six hours on a bus, but I am disappointed that we didn’t respond,” said head coach Sergio Lopez. “I think we had a legitimate chance to beat Virginia Tech’s men but we just took ourselves out of it.”
The losses drop the Mountaineer men to 6-5 overall and the women to 5-7. The win improves the Virginia Tech men to 5-4 and the women to 7-3.
Highlighting the meet for the men was freshman standout Pablo Marmolejo. The Mexico City, Mexico native began his day by taking first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.98, beating teammate Pedro Pinto who took second (1:56.24). Marmolejo followed up that performance by winning the 200 fly in 1:49.93.
“He added some excitement to the meet,” said Lopez. Also winning an event in the meet for the men was the 400 free relay, comprised of Pinto, Chris Hagedorn, Matt Drozd and Rick Mann. The foursome finished the race in 3:06.92.
In the 400 medley relay the Mountaineer men finished second in a very close race. Mann, Pinto, Hagedorn and Felipe Cunha finished in 3:23.71, just behind the Hokies relay team that won in 3:22.09.
In the 200 breast Cunha and senior Arda Kostem were able to take second and third place, respectively. Cunha finished in 2:07.24, while Kostem tapped in at 2:08.14.
Junior Chris Hagedorn took second in the 50 free by only 0.08 seconds as Virginia Tech’s Tom Alberi out-touched him in the event with a time of 21.23.
On the women’s side freshman Maritza Paredes was able to stay unbeaten in individual events as she took first in the 100 free with a time of 51.83 seconds. Freshman Erin Tudor took second in the event as she finished in 53.64 seconds.
Tudor took second in the 50 free as well. The Vinton, Va., native swam the sprint event in 24.65, just 0.05 seconds behind the Hokies Emily Guschke.
Junior Megan Carlson recorded another first place finish for WVU when she took first in the 200 breast in 2:27.06.
Mountaineer swimmers Bonnie Sutton and Chelsea Ademski finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM. Sutton finished in 2:15.13 with Ademski touching right behind her (2:15.16).
In the two women’s relays WVU was able to finish second in both. Sutton, Paredes, Megan Carlson and Livia Cascao combined in the 400 medley relay (3:59.84) for second, while Tudor, Paredes, Cascao and Tina Gabrilo took second in the 400 free relay (3:35.15).
The Mountaineers head to Storrs, Conn., on Jan. 29, to face Connecticut at 1 p.m. in their last dual meet before the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 16-19.
