MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 15 West Virginia University women's soccer team (3-1-0) fell to Virginia (4-0-0) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Cavaliers, ranked 10th by the NSCAA, but as high as No. 6 according to the Soccer America poll, scored the match's only goal 6:27 into the contest. UVA's Kristen Weiss took a pass from Sarah Huffman and shot it past West Virginia goalkeeper Lana Bannerman from nearly 18 yards out.
Play throughout the rest of the match was physical, but even. Two yellow cards were handed out during the match and a total of 19 fouls were recorded.
The Mountaineers had a number of scoring opportunities in both the first second halves, but were unable to finish any of their chances.
"Both teams came out physically ready to play," head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown commented. "We both battled, unfortunately, we didn't finish our chances how we would have liked to and they did.
"I'm proud of the way we came out and battled," Izzo-Brown said. "Today was a good test for us. Our weaknesses were exposed, and now we just have to get back to work to fix them."
Today's outcome was the third consecutive 1-0 decision in the series between WVU and UVA.
Prior to the beginning of the match, Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium was dedicated in a ceremony that included remarks from WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr., Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong, former women's player and current WVU women's assistant coach Nikki Garzon, and stadium namesake Dick Dlesk.
More than 1,200 fans were on hand for the day's festivities.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., when they play host to Arizona at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
