MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Villanova on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Despite dominating on the offensive end, the Mountaineers (7-2-0, 2-1-0) were unable to capitalize on any of their 25 shots throughout the night, while the Wildcats (8-1-0, 2-0-0) converted one of their five to secure the victory.
West Virginia controlled much of the flow of the match throughout the entire contest, earning 10 shots in the first half and 15 in the second, but it was a defensive let down in the 54th minute that gave Villanova its goal.
Kayce Blandford played a long ball out of the back and Villanova’s Laura Johnson ran it down and put it over the head Mountaineer goalkeeper Lana Bannerman for the game’s only score.
“I have to give Villanova credit,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown after the match. “They finished their chances. We had numerous opportunities to score, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. It was a great game tonight, and we are looking forward to getting back after it on Sunday.”
West Virginia battled throughout the entire second half, keeping the pressure on the Villanova defense. Mountaineer Laura Kane had the best scoring chance, putting the ball off the post in the early goings of the second half. In the game’s waning moments, two would-be game-tying shots also went off the post.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26, against St. John’s at 3 p.m, as part of a double header with the men’s team.
