MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No.9 West Virginia University women's soccer team plays host to two conference opponents this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The 25th-ranked Villanova Wildcats (7-1-0, 1-0-0) come to town on Friday, Sept. 24, for a 7 p.m., match. West Virginia (7-1-0, 2-0-0) last faced the Wildcats in the semifinal match of the 2003 BIG EAST championship. The two squads battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie before Villanova advanced to the final match on penalty kicks. In a series that features more ties than any other in WVU women's soccer history, West Virginia owns a slim 3-2-4 lead.
On Sunday, West Virginia plays host to St. John's in a 3 p.m., match that is the second half of a double-header with the Mountaineer men's team. A variety of promotions and giveaways will occur throughout the day as part of U.S. Youth Soccer Month.
The Mountaineers own a 5-2-1 all-time record in matches with the Red Storm. Last season, West Virginia defeated St. John's twice, once in the regular season and once in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST championship.
On the season, West Virginia is led by junior midfielder Marisa Kanela's 13 points (5G, 3A). Defensively, the Mountaineers have posted four shutouts in their first eight contests and sophomore goalkeeper Lana Bannerman's 0.62 goals against average is 29th in the nation.
This weekend's matches are the first two of a four-game homestand that continues Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m., when the Mountaineers take on No. 1 Notre Dame. West Virginia will then face Syracuse at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 3, as part of Super Soccer Sunday.
