Volleyball: WVU Splits a Pair at PSU Classic

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The West Virginia University volleyball team split a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the PSU Classic in State College, Pa.
West Virginia (4-6) closed out the day with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-22) victory over Maryland-Baltimore County and a 0-3 (30-18, 30-20, 30-18) loss to No. 5 Penn State.
WVU was led in their win over UMBC by junior Stephanie Zolna and freshman Abby Tevis who both recorded 13 kills. Senior Alison Zemanski finished with nine kills and two errors on just 17 attempts for a solid attack percentage of .412.
Senior Brandice Studnicka led the Mountaineers in assists with 34 while freshman Kailee Goold added 10. Tevis and fellow freshman Megan Carroll stepped up in the absence of Aurora Ebert-Santos to record 10 and 15 digs respectively.
In WVU’s loss to Penn State, Zemanski and Hockenson were the Mountaineer kill leaders with nine apiece. Studnicka and Goold led West Virginia for the second consecutive match in assists with 19 and eight respectively. Studnicka led a balanced defensive attack with 10 digs. Carroll recorded eight and Ebert-Santos, Zolna and Tevis each had seven.
West Virginia finished the weekend at the Penn State Classic with a 1-2 record. The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 24, when they play two matches to open the Marist Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. WVU takes on Columbia at 2 p.m. and host Marist at 6 p.m.
