PROVIDENCE, R. I. - The No. 13 West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned its sixth victory of the season with a 4-1 win over Providence on Friday afternoon at the Friars’ Glay Field.
The Mountaineers (6-1-0, 1-0-0) opened the match scoring in the 13th minute when junior midfielder Marisa Kanela connected on her fourth goal of the season. Kanela turned on a pass from senior defender Leslie Barden and beat Providence goalkeeper Laura Elfers to her near side for the early score.
WVU took its 1-0 lead into the half, but quickly turned the match into a 2-0 contest when senior forward Laura Kane put a drop pass from fellow forward Rachael Minnich into the back of the net at the 47:06 mark.
The Mountaineers scored again three minutes later when Minnich headed a cross from Kane past the PC goalkeeper for the third score of the match.
Providence (3-4-0, 0-1-0) ruined WVU’s quest for its fourth shutout of the season in the 53rd minute when Maura Robertson found Veronica Bakke on a long ball to make the score 3-1 West Virginia.
Freshman midfielder Ashley Banks set up the Mountaineers’ fourth and final goal of the afternoon at 74:51 with a throw in from 20 yards out. Minnich tallied her second goal of the night when she headed Banks’ throw past Elfers.
The win over the Friars marks the fourth conference-opening win in the history of West Virginia women’s soccer.
