Volleyball: Studnicka Leads WVU Past Delaware

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated Delaware State 3-0 (30-14, 30-11, 30-19) in Saturday’s nightcap of the WVU Invitational in Morgantown, W.Va.
West Virginia (2-3) won its second straight match after defeating High Point 3-1 earlier in the afternoon.
The Mountaineers were paced by senior Brandice Studnicka. In just two games of action, the Clay Center, Neb., native record a team-high 21 assists to go along with a team-best 13 digs.
In game one, WVU cruised to an easy 30-14 victory behind 6 kills from Stephanie Zolna and 5 digs to go along with 11 assists from Studnicka.
West Virginia used a 21-6 run to close out the Hornets in the second game of the match. Freshman Abby Tevis paced WVU with five kills while Zolna added four. The difference in the match was Studnicka who recorded 10 assists to go with eight digs of her own. Sophomore defensive specialist Aurora Ebert-Santos added five digs for the Mountaineers.
After going up by a score of 27-13, Delaware State went on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 29-19. Senior Alison Zemanski closed the door on the Hornet run in dominating fashion with a powerful kill to end the match and help WVU record its second consecutive victory.
Zolna and Tevis both had 10 kills while sophomore setter Gina Cusanelli registered eight digs. Zemanski added seven kills for the Mountaineers while juniors Kelly Mullins and Julie Hockenson added six.
“Today was a good day for us,” coach Veronica Hammersmith says. “I thought we played well as a team and we were able to get a lot of kids some valuable experience.”
The Mountaineers resume play in the WVU Invitational with a double-header tomorrow starting at 12:30 p.m. against the Bowling Green Falcons. WVU will then take on the Robert Morris Colonials in tomorrow’s nightcap at 8 p.m.
