MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's basketball coach Mike Carey today announced that Joei (pronounced Joy) Clyburn has joined the Mountaineers for the 2004-05 campaign. She is enrolled and eligible for play this season.
Clyburn, a 6-1 guard/forward from Detroit, Mich., averaged 15.3 points and 9.4 rebounds a contest at Arkansas-Fort Smith last season in guiding the Lions to a 26-2 overall record and a berth in the NJCAA Division I Final Four. Fort Smith finished the year ranked No. 5 in the country.
Clyburn was the NJCAA Region II Player of the Year last season and was also an all-Region II first team performer. As a freshman at Fort Smith, Clyburn guided the Lions to a 22-1 record and a No. 13 national ranking. During her freshman campaign, she was a third-team NJCAA All-American after averaging 18.3 points and 9.7 rebounds.
"Joei is an extremely talented young lady and I'm very happy that she will be a part of the team," Carey said. "She is very athletic and can score from several positions. If she works hard for her two years here at WVU she will be one of the best players in the conference and in the country."
In high school, Clyburn graduated from Benedictine High in Detroit where she led the school to its first-ever state championship en route to earning first-team all-state recognition. As a senior she averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds. Her prep career began at Bishop Borgess High and she was selected to the Detroit News' "Dream Team" after her junior season. She was also named a Street & Smith's honorable mention All-American that year.
Clyburn will be a junior this season for the Mountaineers.
