MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University head men's soccer coach Mike Seabolt announced today the signing of Paul Cunningham for the 2004 season.
Cunningham a New Plymouth, New Zealand, native, is a standout defender on the New Zealand national U-17 school boy team. He has also trained with the national team's U-18 team.
"The coaching staff is very excited to sign Paul as a member of the WVU soccer team," said head coach Mike Seabolt. "Anytime you can bring in an international player of Paul's caliber it is a great addition to the team."
The 6-2, 180 lb. defender recently was able to show his ability when the New Zealand school boy team played in an international tour against England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria and Belgium. Cunningham started every game in the competition.
With his experience at such a high level coach Seabolt and his staff believe Cunningham can see significant playing time in 2004.
"Paul should come in and compete for a spot at left back or center back right away," said Seabolt.
Cunningham will help fill out a roster already full of young talent. Heading into this fall Seabolt and his staff have 13 sophomores, one junior and four seniors, all of which saw significant action in 2003.
