MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Robert Summers, a 7-foot center who played two seasons at Penn State, will attend West Virginia University this fall and play basketball for the Mountaineers, WVU Coach John Beilein announced today.
A Columbus, Ohio, native, Summers will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We believe that Rob will be a great addition to us both offensively and defensively because of the aggressive play in the BIG EAST," says Beilein. "Rob has impressed us with his work habits, his character and his desire to develop his basketball skills."
At Penn State, Summers made 41 career starts of the 56 games the Nittany Lions had played the past two seasons. While there, he averaged 3.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Summers had a career shooting percentage of 43.9 percent and added 101 offensive rebounds, 27 assists, 24 blocks and 22 steals.
As a sophomore, he started 20 games and averaged 3.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. During his freshman campaign, Summers started 21 games, averaging 3.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He led the Nittany Lions with a 50.6 shooting percentage, while shooting 70.3 from the free throw line and also had 16 blocks. Summers posted a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds at Michigan.
Summers was a second team all-Ohio Capital Conference pick as a senior at Lincoln High School in Gahanna, Ohio. He was a Future Stars honorable mention All-American and was named a Columbus State Scholar Athlete. An honorable mention all-District selection, Summers was a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
Summers joins 6-foot-2 guard Darris Nichols and 6-foot-11 center Luke Bonner to this year’s recruiting class. Junior Mike Gansey, a 6-foot-4 guard who sat out this past season after transferring from St. Bonaventure, will join the WVU lineup this fall.
