MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four West Virginia University football players have signed free agent contracts with NFL teams.
Consensus All-American linebacker Grant Wiley signed with the Minnesota Vikings, cornerback Lance Frazier landed with the Baltimore Ravens, safety Brian King signed with the Carolina Panthers and wide receiver Travis Garvin inked a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Running back Quincy Wilson was the lone Mountaineer player selected in the NFL draft, going yesterday to the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round.
Wiley received interest from NFL teams and was invited to the Senior Bowl after grabbing first team All-America honors by FWAA, Sporting News, AP, CNNSI.com, Rivals.com, CSTV and Southern Football Weekly. Also a unanimous all-Big East selection, the Trappe, Pa., native led the nation in 2003 with seven forced fumbles and ranked third in average tackles per game (12.85). He is WVU’s career leader with 492 tackles, 47.5 tackles for losses and 298 solo tackles.
King had a strong senior season earning first team all-Big East honors after a midseason move from cornerback to safety. The Damascus, Md., resident picked off six passes and broke up 21 more and holds the school record with 54 career pass breakups. He ranked among NCAA leaders in pass breakups and interceptions.
Frazier was a three-year starter at field corner who finished his career with eight interceptions, 38 pass breakups and 192 total tackles. As a senior he picked off five passes and also flourished as a punt returner, averaging 20.8 yards per return and taking one back 72 yards for a touchdown against Temple. Frazier is a native of Delray Beach, Fla.
Garvin signed with the Chiefs after catching 17 passes for 306 yards and two scores as a senior in 2003. Garvin, a transfer from Missouri, caught 19 career passes for 330 yards and also rushed 21 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns. His long TD run was 48 yards in the loss to Cincinnati.
Other WVU seniors who could sign free agent contracts include fullback Moe Fofana, tight end Tory Johnson, defensive end Fred Blueford, punter Todd James and center Ben Timmons.
