BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – West Virginia University wrestlers advanced to the second day of the 2004 Eastern Wrestling League Championships in Bloomsburg, Pa.
West Virginia sits in second place after day one action at Nelson Field House. The Mountaineers stand just two and a half points back of leader Edinboro. Pitt, host Bloomsburg and Clarion round out the Top five in the overall standings.
The Mountaineers will send five grapplers to the championships finals tomorrow afternoon. All five have clinched automatic bids the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis. Three of WVU’s automatic qualifiers will make their first appearance at nationals: Casey Brewster (125), Joe Clarke (141) and Matt Daddino (197). Matt Lebe (157) and Greg Jones (184) will make their second and third appearances.
Senior Brewster scored a fall (5:45) in round one over Cleveland State’s DeAngelo Penn and upset No. 1 seed Drew Headlee of Pitt, 9-4, in his second match to advance to the championship match.
At 141-pounds, Clarke tallied a 17-3 major decision of Bloomsburg’s Scott Heckman and 6-3 decision over Clarion’s Frank Edgar. The senior Mountaineer will face top-seed Ron Tarquinio of Pitt in the finals tomorrow.
Lebe and Jones carried their No. 1 seedings into the championship bouts on Sunday. Sophomore Lebe tallied two major decisions and junior Jones posted a technical fall and major decision victories for WVU.
Junior Daddino will face No. 1 seed Josh Birt of Pitt in the finals after posting a 24-10 major decision and 5-1 victory.
Still alive for WVU are Seth Lisa (133), Mike Torriero (149), Zac Fryling (165) and Eric Mullen (174). All four wrestlers posted 1-1 records on Saturday.
The consolation semifinals will open Session III action on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Session IV is slated for a 2 p.m. start with the championships finals being heard free on a YAHOOsports broadcast with Bloomsburg’s John Hohman calling the action.
