NORTHRIDGE, CA. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team defeated Cal State Northridge, 4-3, in a five-hour match on Sunday, Mar. 14, at the Matador Tennis Courts in Northridge, Ca.
The Mountaineers (6-3) split with the Matadors (3-10) in singles play but earned the doubles point after taking two out of three matches.
In singles action, sophomore Melissa Day defeated Olga Yepremian 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1, freshman Kelly Walsh topped Ana Matijasevic 6-4, 6-4 and senior Courtney Howell out dueled Kasia Krasinska 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2.
In doubles play, sophomore Raynie Theis and Walsh combined forces to defeat Yepremian/Krasinska, 8-6, and freshman Ashley Constantine and Howell topped Bierman/Kumar, 8-3.
“Cal State Northridge is a well coached team that was ranked in the top 60 last year so we knew they would be a formidable opponent,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “I am thrilled with our team’s effort today. We did what we had to do in order to win.”
West Virginia has little time to recover from Sunday’s grueling match. The Mountaineers are back in action on Monday, Mar. 15, when they take on Colgate at 10 a.m. in La Jolla, Ca.
