MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The 11th-seeded West Virginia University women's basketball team will face sixth-seeded Ohio State at St. John Arena (13,267) in the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament Saturday, March 20.
West Virginia (21-10 overall, 10-6 in the BIG EAST) will face Ohio State (20-9, 11-5 in Big Ten play). The winner of that game will face the winner of the Boston College-Eastern Michigan contest Monday in Columbus.
"Wow! I'm so happy for our players and for our program, and for the BIG EAST getting eight teams in the tournament," says Coach Mike Carey, who was selected as BIG EAST coach of the year. "The teams in our bracket are all excellent and we are excited about this challenge."
Game times will be announced later. All NCAA women's games are available via ESPN game-plan.
West Virginia has a 2-2 all-time record in NCAA tournament play. The Mountaineers won at Western Kentucky (66-57) and lost at Virginia (81-68) in 1989. In 1992, WVU defeated Clemson (73-72) in a game at the WVU Coliseum, then lost 103-83 at Virginia. The Mountaineers are 0-8 all-time against Ohio State, having last played in 1998.
