CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Chanivia scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half to lead No. 19 Miami to an 82-74 victory over West Virginia Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
Yalonda McCormick contributed 14 and Melissa Knight, Shaquana Wilkins and Tamara James added 12 each to help the Hurricanes improve to 21-5, 10-5.
Kate Bulger hit a career-high eight three-point baskets and finished with a game-high 28 for the Mountaineers, now 19-8, 10-5.
Michelle Carter scored 14, Yolanda Paige had 12 and Janell Dunlap added 11 for the Mountaineers.
Leading 18-17 with 9:30 to go, Miami went on a 17-7 run to take a 35-24 lead. The Mountaineers were only able to hit one field goal over the remaining 4:43 to finish the half down 11, 37-26.
The Hurricanes went on an 11-0 run to start the second half to build a 20-point 46-26 lead forcing West Virginia coach Mike Carey to call timeout.
The Hurricanes led by as many as 22 three times including 70-48 with 4:52 left before the Mountaineers made Miami uncomfortable.
Four straight points cut Miami’s lead to 18, and another six straight points trimmed Miami’s advantage to 14, 74-58.
Following a James basket, a pair of Paige baskets were sandwiched between two Kate Bulger threes to cut Miami’s lead to just six with 37 seconds left.
Two more threes by Bulger got the Mountaineers to within six once again with 12 seconds left. Fortunately for Miami, the Hurricanes were able to hit 8 of 8 free throw attempts down the stretch.
Miami finished the game making 16 of 19 free throw attempts and out-rebounding West Virginia 44-32. Wilkins led the Miami effort with 14 boards.
West Virginia recovered from a poor first half shooting the basketball to make 23 of 64 field goal attempts for 35.9 percent. The Mountaineers were 19 of 24 from the free throw line and 9 of 27 from three-point range.
Paige was credited with a game-high 12 assists.
Sherell Sowho, who finished with just 3 points, went over the 1,000-point mark for her career. She now shows 1,001 for her career. Kate Bulger also moved past Donna Abbott into fourth place on WVU’s career scoring chart and now shows 1,677 points. In third place is guard Talisha Hargis (1994-98) with 1,751 points.
West Virginia winds up the regular season on the road at No. 1 Connecticut Tuesday night. The game is scheduled to tip off 7:30 pm.
