MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women's basketball freshman Meg Bulger has been named BIG EAST freshman of the week for the sixth time this season.
Bulger, a Pittsburgh native, earns the honor for the fifth consecutive week after scoring a game-high 17 points in West Virginia's narrow 70-64 loss to No. 25 Boston College and grabbing six rebounds and getting a key block late in the Mountaineers' 69-66 upset of No. 19 Virginia Tech.
With the honor, Bulger becomes only the sixth player in BIG EAST history to earn freshman of the week honors six times in their rookie season. She joins Svetlana Abrosimova (UConn, 1997-98), Becky Gottstein (Boston College, 1998-99), Alicia Ratay (Notre Dame,1999-00), Rebekkah Brunson (Georgetown, 2000-01) and Jacqueline Batteast (Notre Dame, 2001-02) on that list.
Rebecca Lobo holds the single season record for rookie of the week honors. Lobo won the award seven times during her freshman campaign in 1991-92.
Bulger and the rest of the Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Villanova for a 7:30 p.m., contest at The Pavilion.
