MORGANTOWN, W.VA. -- West Virginia University quarterback Rasheed Marshall was named Most Valuable Player by a vote of his teammates at the football awards banquet tonight at the WVU Mountainlair. Marshall, the BIG EAST offensive player of the year, was also voted a team captain, along with Ben Lynch, Adam Lehnortt and Jerry White.
Other team award winners selected by the coaches were: Ira Rodgers Award for all-around excellence: SCOTT GYORKO and JEFF BERK; John Russell Award for line play: TIM BROWN and BEN LYNCH; Gridiron Gladiator Award for on-field tenacity: DAN MOZES and Adam Jones;
Whitey Gwynne Award for unsung contributions: Garin Justice and Jerry White; Scott Shirley Award for special teams play: Scott Fleming; Danny Van Etten Award for rookies of the year: Ryan Stancheck (offense) and Mortty Ivy (defense);
Ideal Mountaineer Man Award: Charles Hales, JOHN PENNINGTON, MIKE LORELLO and ANTHONY MIMS; Coaches’ Contribution Award: RASHEED MARSHALL, CHARLES HALES, ADAM LEHNORTT and MARC MAGRO.
West Virginia (8-3) have begun preparation for the 2005 Toyota Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., against Florida State (8-3). The Gator Bowl will be played at Alltel Stadium at Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005 at 12:30 pm.
