MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Long-time Mountaineer football and men’s basketball public address announcer Frank “Doc” Stevens died Tuesday, Nov. 2, following a long illness.
Stevens, retired assistant dean of the WVU School of Dentistry, excited West Virginia fans for 44 years with his enthusiastic descriptions at football and basketball games. Stevens popularized the phrase “Let’s Bring on the Mountaineers!” and also developed the familiar introduction of the Mountaineer Marching Band.
Stevens spent a total of 19 years with the School of Dentistry where he served as assistant professor and assistant dean for external affairs before retiring at the end of the 2002-03 academic year. That was also the last year Stevens served as public address announcer for athletic events. Funeral arrangements for Stevens are pending.
