MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia makes its first-ever trip to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU Saturday afternoon at the Maravich Assembly Center.
West Virginia (2-0) is coming off a tough, 72-69 victory at Duquesne on Wednesday night when Patrick Beilein came off the bench to score 16 points to lead four double-figurer scorers.
Senior Tyrone Sally contributed 15 points and Kevin Pittsnogle came off the bench to score 14 as the Mountaineers out-scored the Dukes bench, 33-22.
Sally is the team’s top scorer after two games with an average of 15.5 points per game. Pittsnogle is averaging 13.5 points per game as West Virginia’s first sub, while center D’or Fischer, held scoreless against Duquesne, is averaging 12 points after scoring a career-high 24 in the season opener against St. Peter’s.
LSU is 3-0 so far this year with home wins over Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette and New Orleans. The Tigers are averaging 87 points per game by utilizing a quick and athletic lineup made up of three guards and two forwards.
Six-foot-eight sophomore forward Brandon Bass scored a career-high 30 points against Lafayette and leads LSU with an average of 17.7 points per game. Six-foot-nine, 310-pound freshman Glen Davis starts at the other forward position and is averaging 11.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest. Davis was one of the nation’s top recruits coming out of high school last spring, earning Parade and McDonald’s All-American honors at University High School in Baton Rouge.
Six-foot-six guard Antonio Hudson plays the swing position and is averaging 17 points and shooting 52.9 percent from three-point range.
Five-foot-eleven guards Darrel Mitchell and Tack Minor ear expected to start in the backcourt. Mitchell led LSU with 20 points in its most recent victory against New Orleans and is averaging 13.7 points per game. Minor scored 10 against New Orleans and is averaging 10.7 points per contest.
LSU uses four players off the bench led by 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Regis Koundjia, who averages 5.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.
LSU is shooting 41.7 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from behind the three-point arc.
Coach John Brady took over the Tiger program in 1998 and has led LSU to four winning seasons including a 28-6 record in 2000 when LSU made the NCAA tournament “Sweet 16.”
Last year the Tigers had an 18-11 record and finished second in the SEC West with an 8-8 conference mark.
West Virginia is playing an SEC team for the eighth consecutive season.
Saturday’s game will tip off at 1 pm and will be televised locally on Fox Sports Pittsburgh. MSN’s radio coverage begins with the pre-game show at 12:30 pm.
