Jones recorded a 3-2 decision over Iowa All-American and No. 2 ranked Paul Bradley in the 39th Annual United States Marines/National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic.
“It was good to get a tough match under my belt early in the season,” says Jones, a Slickville, Pa., native. “I’m sure (Paul) Bradley and I will see each other a few more times this season.”
The Mountaineer senior scored first with a single-leg takedown in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead. Bradley would escape to cut the lead to 2-1 and was then warned for stalling to close the period.
Jones increased his lead to 3-1 with an escape from the defensive position to begin the second period. Both grapplers felt each other out and traded shots to finish the middle period without further scoring.
Bradley, from the defensive position, tallied an escape to start the third period and make it 3-2. Two-time NCAA champion Jones kept the pressure on and nearly scored with :15 seconds remaining but a stalemate was called as the match ends at 3-2.
The two grapplers met in the semifinals of the 2004 NCAA Championships with Jones earning an 8-3 decision.
Jones improves to 3-0 all-time in NWCA All-Star matches. In 2003, he defeated Oklahoma State’s Chris Pendleton, 7-3. Last year, Jones scored a 10-6 victory over Northern Illinois’ Ben Heizer.
College Sports Television (CSTV) will air a replay of the All-Star Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 10:00 p.m.
