MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 28 West Virginia University women’s cross country team is set to compete in the 2004 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional championships on Saturday, Nov. 13, in State College, Pa.
The Mountaineers enter Saturday’s race fresh off a fifth place finish at the BIG EAST championships. Senior Megan Metcalfe has been WVU’s top performer all season and will look to record a solid finish to lead West Virginia to birth in the 2004 NCAA championships.
Seniors Jennifer Davis, Jennifer Kemp, Rachel Carden and Devon Plesuk along with junior Susan Davis must put together quality finishes to propel the Mountaineers to a top regional finish.
West Virginia’s wildcard on Saturday could prove to be senior Tara Struyk. The Edmonton, Alberta, native has been sidelined in each of the last two races with a shin injury. Struyk and Metcalfe were the only two Mountaineer runners to qualify for the NCAA championships last season.
As a team, WVU has been one spot short of qualifying for nationals in each of the last two seasons. West Virginia’s bid for an NCAA qualification will begin at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday.
