Wrestling: 2004-05 Schedule Announced

“This year’s schedule is full of challenging and competitive dual meets and tournament action,” says head coach Craig Turnbull. “The team has been working hard and we are looking forward to the season.”
The Mountaineers will play host to four dual meets during the upcoming season and begin the year on Nov. 7, with the 23rd annual WVU Open.
WVU participates in three tournaments during the first part of the year. The Mountaineers will compete in the Navy Classic (Nov. 20), Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 3-4) and Midlands Classic (Dec. 29-30) before beginning their dual slate.
Highlighting WVU’s non-conference agenda is a dual meet with Hofstra and road trips to Nebraska and Penn State – each a nationally ranked team.
“We have road trips at two great wrestling environments in Nebraska and Penn State,” adds Turnbull. “These dual meets serve as good early and mid-season challenges.”
The Eastern Wrestling League portion of the schedule includes seven league contents, including two at home to close the regular season.
West Virginia returns to the prestigious NWCA National Duals in January for the fourth consecutive season. The Mountaineers will compete against the top programs in the country during the two-day event.
“Being invited to back to the National Duals is of great significance for our program,” explains Turnbull. “Their goal is to invite the Top 16 teams in the country. This gives our team a great opportunity to compete against teams whom we have trouble getting on our schedule.”
WVU has won two EWL tournament titles in the past three years. Clarion will play host to this year’s EWL Championships, scheduled for March 5-6.
The NCAA Championships return to St. Louis, Mo., on March 17-19. A year ago, Greg Jones won his second national title in leading the Mountaineers to a 16th place team finish.
Turnbull enters his 27th season at the helm of the Mountaineers in a career where his teams have collected 221 wins. The first official practice is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 12.
