The Mountaineers (14-5-0) were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities while the Wildcats (13-5-1) took advantage of theirs to advance to BIG EAST semifinal next Friday.
Villanova forward Laura Johnson scored her seventh goal of the year in the 81st minute to notch the Wildcats’ only shot on goal of the game.
West Virginia controlled play throughout the entire contest, earning 20 shots on the day. The Mountaineers had several dangerous chances, including a shot that hit squarely off the crossbar in the first half and several near misses in the second half as well.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t advance forward in the BIG EAST tournament today,” commented head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “But, one of our main goals was to advance to the NCAA tournament and that’s where our focus shifts right now. We’ll move forward and prepare for the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament.”
The Mountaineers now await seeding in the NCAA tournament. Pairings will be announced on Monday, Nov. 8.
