Greg Jones earned a bronze medal at 84 kg/185 pounds with his 4-1, 2-0 decision over Frank Cornely. The senior finished with a 4-1 record, losing his only match to eventual champion and 2004 Olympic alternate Lee Fullhart.
“I’m very pleased with our effort this weekend,” says WVU assistant head coach Zeke Jones. “Greg again proved that he can wrestle with the best in the country. He should be very proud of his bronze finish.”
Matt Lebe advanced to the quarterfinals at 74 kg/163 pounds before dropping a 2-0, 3-0 decision to 2004 Olympian and eventual champion Joe Williams. The junior posted a 2-2 record against the country’s top grapplers.
Zac Fryling lost his first match but battled back to the fifth round of consolations at 74 kg/163 pounds. The sophomore tallied a 4-2 record in his first major open tournament competition.
“Matt and Zac both wrestled well and can take something away from this tournament,” adds Jones. “This was a great opportunity for our guys to gain experience and compete in an Olympic caliber type setting.”
The tournament, hosted by Arizona State University, is the premiere event that kicks off each USA Wrestling season.
The Mountaineer wrestling team opens its season in the Shell Building on Sunday, Nov. 7, with the 23rd annual WVU Open.
