PHILADELPHIA – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out its 2004 fall season with a set of matches at the ITA East Regional championships on Oct. 22-23 in Philadelphia.
Freshman Monica Lyskawa was the only Mountaineer to compete in the singles bracket. The Brampton, Ontario, native was defeated in a tightly contested first round match by Katrina Elder-Bush of Rutgers, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Two teams represented the gold and blue in doubles play. Freshman Stacey Percival and junior Raynie Theis bowed out of the tournament with an 8-2 first round loss to Rivelis and Chao of Pennsylvania. Freshman Natalia Prinz and sophomore Kelly Walsh fell to Virginia’s Pereira and Del Priore, 8-5, in a hard fought first round match.
Overall, WVU finished the fall season with a singles record of 37-22 (.627) and a doubles mark of 14-11 (.560).
“I was proud of the way our girls came in and competed this weekend,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “This tournament gave us a good indication of what we need to work on heading into the spring season. If we continue to improve at the pace that we have improved this fall, we will be in great shape heading into BIG EAST play.”
The Mountaineers have three months off to prepare for their 2004 spring season opener on Jan. 21 against Cincinnati.
