Radford, Va. – Led by junior Marisa Kanela’s five points, the No. 16 West Virginia University women’s soccer team routed Radford 5-0 at Patrick D. Cupp Stadium on Friday night.
Kanela scored two goals and assisted on another in the first 12 minutes for the Mountaineers (14-3-0) in their last non-conference match of the season.
West Virginia got on the board first at 4:34 when the Wantagh, N.Y., native, bent WVU’s first corner kick of the night into the Radford (8-6-1) goal for her tenth goal of the year.
Six and a half minutes later, Kanela sent a cross from the left flank into the box where Rachael Minnich was waiting to head home her ninth score of the season.
Kanela got her second goal of the match and her team-high 11th of the year 60 seconds later when she headed a throw in from Ashley Banks, who extended her scoring steak to six matches tonight, past Radford goalkeeper Laura Bergsten to give the Mountaineers the early 3-0 lead.
WVU extended its lead to 4-0 in the 26th minute when senior Laura Kane fed freshman Kim Bonilla on one of the Mountaineers’ eight corner kicks of the first half.
Senior Ashley Weimer made it 5-0 when a shot by Kanela deflected off a Radford defender and a charging Weimer sent the ball into the lower right corner of the goal at 70:25.
The Mountaineers tallied 15 corner kicks on the night, two away from the school record of 17 set against Seton Hall in 2001. WVU outshot RU 25-5 as well, and the West Virginia defense did not allow a corner kick all match.
A combined effort by goalkeepers Lana Bannerman and Jacque Sutphin resulted in West Virginia’s sixth shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers return to action for their regular season finale on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. when Georgetown visits Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. West Virginia needs a win over the Hoyas in order to secure the No.2 seed in the BIG EAST tournament.
