Morgantown, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team is set to host BIG EAST rival Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (8-6-0) enter Saturday's match winning three of their last four and five of their last eight contests. More importantly, three of the five wins have came against BIG EAST opponents.
Freshman Dan Stratford continues to lead WVU's offensive barrage that has already surpassed last season's goal total. In 2003 the team tallied 18 goals compared to 21 in 2004 with Stratford scoring six and assisting on one.
Sophomore Nick Noble has stepped up his play in goal so far, posting a 0.98 goals against average.
The Wildcats (6-3-4) hit a lull midway through their season and will be looking to break out of it. After starting the season 5-0-1, Villanova's offense sputtered and the team went 0-3-3 in its next six games.
On Saturday, Oct. 16, the Wildcats got back on track with a 2-1 win on the road against Georgetown.
Villanova enters the match in fourth place in the conference while the Mountaineers are clinging on to the last BIG EAST tournament spot in eighth place. Last year WVU earned its only conference win of the season when it knocked off the Wildcats on the road, 1-0, in overtime. WVU holds the all-time series lead 10-7-0.
