SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s soccer team won its fifth-straight match, defeating Seton Hall 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Junior Rachael Minnich tallied her eighth goal of the season in the 14th minute off an assist from redshirt freshman Natalie Cocchi to give the Mountaineers (13-3-0, 7-2-0) an early 1-0 lead over the Pirates (7-7-2, 2-6-0).
West Virginia carried its one-goal lead into the half and held it until 53:41 when a West Virginia defensive mistake resulted in an own goal, tying the match at 1-1.
The Mountaineers reclaimed the lead for good at 72:03 when Marisa Kanela sent WVU’s 11th corner kick of the game toward the head of freshman Ashley Banks and Banks headed the ball past the Seton Hall goalkeeper for her eighth goal of the year.
After allowing Seton Hall the first three shots of the match, the Mountaineer defense did not allow another Pirate shot until midway through the second half. West Virginia outshot Seton Hall 31-4 on the day.
The Mountaineers had several chances to build on their 2-0 lead including a shot from senior forward Laura Kane that hit the center of the crossbar and bounced straight down, but not over the goal line with less than four minutes remaining in the match. Minutes earlier, Kanela had a shot hit off the far post, resulting in a near miss for WVU.
Kane set a school record for shots in a game with 13 in the match.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, when it travels to Radford for a 7 p.m., non-conference match. The Mountaineers will then close out regular season play on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m., versus Georgetown at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
