PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out the second day of the Martha Thorn Invitational with a doubles record of 5-1 on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Pittsburgh YMCA.
The focus of the tournament on Saturday shifted to the doubles competition as the first and quarterfinal rounds of the flight A and B doubles brackets were completed.
Junior Raynie Theis and freshman Stacey Percival joined forces to win two matches in the flight A doubles bracket. The duo defeated Muething and Pace of Mt. St. Mary’s, 8-3, before topping Dektas and Delorie of George Mason by a score of 8-3.
Freshman Natalia Prinz and and sophomore Kelly Walsh also had success in flight A doubles after defeating Iosue and Edmonds of MSM, 8-1, and Carlin and Reilly of Villanova by default.
WVU’s only team in Flight B doubles was the unit of sophomores Catherine Koontz and Ashley Constantine. The two automatically advanced to the quarterfinal round with a default victory over LaRoco and Cuti of Loyola before falling 9-8 in a hard-fought match to Pitt’s Friedman and Petrasko.
“I thought our doubles teams gave a commendable effort today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “We still have two groups in contention for the flight A doubles title which gives us a good opportunity to come out of this tournament with a doubles championship. We are looking forward to a great day of tennis tomorrow on both the singles and doubles side.”
Sunday marks the final day of the Martha Thorn Invitational. The final day of action will include the semifinals and finals of all the singles and doubles flights.
