The camp is open to wrestlers who would like advanced freestyle training in preparation for the Sunkist/ASU International Open scheduled for Oct. 28-30.
The Sunkist Open is a premiere event that kicks off each USA Wrestling season. The tournament serves as the selection tool for choosing the winter touring teams and is the longest standing international open tournament in the United States. Elite wrestlers come from all over the world to compete in women’s and men’s Freestyle as well as men’s Greco-Roman competition.
Five Mountaineers will travel to Arizona to compete at the Sunkist/ASU International Open. Seniors Greg Jones and Mike Torriero, junior Matt Lebe and sophomores Zac Fryling and Jared Villers will gain experience by competing against some of the country’s best grapplers.
“Not only is the world of wrestling always evolving but FILA, the international governing body for wrestling, is always experimenting and implementing new rules,” says Jones, a 2004 Athens Olympic freestyle coach. “We must be ready to adapt to any changes that collegiate and international wrestling undertakes. This is another opportunity for our guys to train against the best.”
Several of the nation’s top wrestlers have already committed to WVU’s training camp including 2008 Olympic hopefuls Tommy Rowlands (Ohio State), Lee Fullhart (Iowa), Nik Fekete (Michigan State), Jesse Jantzen (Harvard), Pat Cummins (Penn State) and Scott Owen (Northern Illinois).
“The opportunity to have some of the greatest wrestlers in the world come to Morgantown and train is great,” adds Jones. “Our goal is to help prepare them for the upcoming season, both strategically and technically.”
The Mountaineers continue workouts in preparation for the season opener when they host the 23rd annual WVU Open on Nov. 7.
