MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team opens the 2004-05 season Sunday, Oct. 17, when it hosts the U.S. Naval Academy at the Mountaineer Rifle Range at 8 a.m.
West Virginia is 21-6 all-time vs. Navy and last competed against the Midshipmen on Feb. 10, 2001, winning 6,160-6,143 in Annapolis, Md.
Navy, which placed third at NCAA championships last year, opens its season Saturday at Akron before completing its weekend road trip at WVU on Sunday. The last time Navy came to Morgantown was Nov. 13, 1999, when the Midshipmen handed the Mountaineers their only loss of the season.
The Mountaineers, entering their first year of competition as an NCAA team since 2002-03, return two shooters from its last varsity season two years ago in senior Eric Hensil and junior Brian Launer. Head coach Marsha Beasley enters her 15th season with the team as the school’s all-time leader in wins with a 146-8 record.
