MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team makes their only home appearance of the fall season when they host the annual Martha Thorn Invitational on Oct. 15-17 at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex in Morgantown, W.Va.
Formerly known as the WVU Fall Classic, the tournament was renamed the Martha Thorn Invitational after long-time women's tennis coach Martha Thorn retired prior to the 2001 season. Thorn led the WVU women's tennis program for its first 27 years of existence and was only the fourth Mountaineer coach to accumulate over 300 wins in any sport.
West Virginia looks to build on its recent success this weekend after posting strong finishes at the Maryland Invitational and the Penn State Classic.
“Our girls have competed extremely well through our first two tournaments of the fall season,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “We have had two great weeks of practice and are looking forward to the challenge of this weekend.”
The tournament will feature six teams in Pitt, George Mason, Villanova, Mount Saint Mary’s, Loyola College and West Virginia. On the singles side, the Mountaineers will boast three representatives in flight A, two players in flight B and two competitors in flight C. In doubles, WVU has two teams in flight A and one duo in flight B.
“Our goal this weekend is to win every flight in the tournament,” Silverstein says. “We are confident that each of our players can win their respective brackets. This weekend is another step in our year-long quest to regain respect for our program.”
