Gymnastics: WVU Rolls in Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s gymnastics team tallied the ninth-best team score in program history en route to tri-meet victory over visiting Ohio State and N.C. State Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.

WVU (3-2) scored a 196.25 while the Buckeyes finished second with a 195.6 and the Wolfpack finished in third with a 193.275.
Freshman Janáe Cox won the all-around with a 39.4. The Otisco, Ind., native also won floor with a 9.875 and vault with a 9.85.
Fellow freshmen Cheryl Goldenfield, of Columbia, S.C., and Tynisha Dennnis, a Bowie, Md., native paced the Mountaineer attack. Goldenfield won the balance beam with a 9.9 while Dennis scored a 9.85 on floor.
Sophomore Alyssa DeSantis, a Steubenville, Ohio, native, scored a career high 9.875 on beam. Senior Jessica Bartgis, from Frederick, Md., and junior Carri Nagle, each posted a career-high 9.9 on bars, both tying for first place in the event.
As a team, the Mountaineers had three 49.0 or better team scores in the meet - 49.3 on beam, 49.05 on floor and 49.0 on bars.
Today’s victories marked the 489th and 490th career wins for veteran coach Linda Burdette, now in her 30th season at the helm of the Mountaineer gymnastics team.
The Mountaineers are back in action, Friday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m., in the WVU Coliseum, in a tri-meet with No. 24 Denver and No. 25 Pitt.
