MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Propelled by its 5-0 win over Binghamton and its 2-0 shutout of nationally-ranked Tennessee, the West Virginia University women's soccer team has moved upward in the latest round of polls.
The latest Soccer America rankings tab the Mountaineers as the fifth-best team in the nation, marking the first time in 2003 that WVU has reached the Top 5. The No. 5 rating is West Virginia's highest ever by that national soccer publication and the second-highest ranking in school history. Last season, SoccerBuzz tabbed the Mountaineers No. 4 for the week of Nov. 4.
West Virginia also climbed from No. 9 to No. 8 in this week's NSCAA poll, while SoccerBuzz has the Mountaineers up one spot from last week at No. 9.
The Mountaineers (9-1-0) look to continue their climb up the national rankings this Friday, Oct. 3, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for a 8 p.m., contest with No. 2 Notre Dame. The match is the BIG EAST mid-Atlantic division opener for both squads.
