The Mountaineers and Colonials battled to a scoreless tie for the first 85 minutes of play before leading goal scorer Jarrod Smith got his offense moving. Midfielder Bernard Ouassa poked a ball through the RMU defense which found Smith in full stride. The freshman found his way around goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski and booted the ball into back of the net. The goal gives Smith three on the season.
Just over two minutes later in the 88th minute junior midfielder Aaron Pitchkolan took a loose ball and shot it into the left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Mountaineer defense would hold off RMU for the last two minutes of the match to collect its fourth shutout of the season and also its fourth in a row. The last time a WVU team blanked four teams in a row was 1972.
WVU freshman goalkeeper Nick Noble made five saves on the afternoon. The Damascus, Md., native has still not been scored on in his four games as a Mountaineer. RMU’s Chencinski tallied seven saves in the match.
“It’s great to open our home schedule with a win,” said head coach Mike Seabolt. “The guys came out and gave a great effort, especially in the second half, to collect the win.”
The men return to play on Friday, Sept. 19, when they host the Providence Friars. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
