MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- When classes started at WVU on August 18, members of the Mountaineer wrestling team returned to Morgantown ready for the challenge of the 2003-04 season. Although official practices will not start until mid-October, the team will begin its strength and conditioning workouts on Friday.
“These first few weeks are critical to the foundation of getting ready for the season,” says head coach Craig Turnbull. “Right now we are concentrating on improving our overall strength and conditioning.
“We are getting some drill time in each week which is important. Returning wrestlers will meet with our staff and go over goal setting for the season. The meetings allow us to meet with each guy and discuss past experiences and where we want them to be come November.”
This past season was more of what fans have come to expect from West Virginia wrestling. Turnbull helped WVU go 9-3 and again led his team to an unbeaten mark in EWL dual meet action. Last year’s squad also produced a school-record nine NCAA qualifiers and two All-Americans and WVU’s 10th Top 25 finish since 1988.
The Mountianeers graduated four wrestlers from the 2002-03 squad – Shane Cunanan, Tom McMath, Billy Smith and Adrian Thompson.
