MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s Jeff Huntoon was one of nine men’s coaches named NCAA Division I District coach of the year, the United States Track Coaches Association announced today.
Huntoon was named Mid-Atlantic coach of the year in voting conducted by his peers.
Huntoon led the West Virginia University men’s track team to its first ever IC4A outdoor championship at Princeton, N.J., May 18. The Mountaineers scored 48 team points to edge host Princeton for the regional title.
"More than anything, this award is a testament to the quality of young men we had on our team this year as well as the great job my coaching staff did," said Huntoon.
Huntoon took over the WVU men’s and women’s track and cross country programs after the retirement of long-time coach Martin Pushkin following the 2000 season.
Prior to that, the Kenosha, Wisc., native, was an 11-year assistant coach under Pushkin, helping tutor four Olympians, eight Olympic Trials qualifiers, 22 NCAA All-Americans and 51 NCAA qualifiers.
As dual coach of the women’s program, Huntoon has been responsible for the development of cross country and indoor All-American Megan Metcalfe, who qualified for this weekend’s NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Metcalfe joins teammates Tara Struyk and Jennifer Kemp.
The women’s team finished 17th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
