MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's basketball coach Mike Carey announced today the hiring of Sharrona Reaves as an assistant coach for the 2003-04 season. She replaces Joanna Bernabei who took a similar position at Maryland.
Most recently at the Division I level, Reaves coached at Troy State where she served as recruiting coordinator for three seasons from 1995 to 1998. While at Troy State, she helped guide the Trojans to the 1997 Mid-Con Conference championship. She also served as an assistant coach and recruiter at California-Berkeley in 1998.
Since then, she has coached seventh and eighth grade girls basketball at University School of Nashville and worked in the business sector.
A native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Reaves, the former Sharrona Alexander, was a forward at Alabama who helped guide the Crimson Tide to two NCAA Tournament appearances – the 1992-93 Sweet Sixteen and the 1993-94 Final Four.
A Tide captain as a senior, Reaves averaged 4.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game with four starts in 63 games during her career at Alabama.
She graduated from Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla., with an associate's degree in English in 1992. She graduated from Alabama with a bachelor's of communication degree in 1995.
Reaves is married to Kenley Reaves and they have two children, Kenden, 4 and Kimora, 2.
"West Virginia is a prime place in a very competitive BIG EAST conference to make something special happen. After meeting with Coach Carey and watching some of the players I'm very excited to come to WVU."
"We're excited for Sharrona to become a part of the West Virginia University family," Carey said. "She'll bring an added dimension to the coaching staff with her experience and enthusiasm."
Reaves begins her duties Friday.
Current assistant coach Cindy Martin has now been promoted to first assistant, followed by Reaves and Chester Nichols, who began his responsibilities earlier this week.
