Wrestling: WVU Adds Seven

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University wrestling coach Craig Turnbull announced today the addition of seven wrestlers for the 2003-04 season.
Giving the coach signatures were Shane Grogg of Parkersburg, W.Va., Pat Barrentine of Dayton, Ohio, Joe Clarke of Atlanta, Ga., Mike Goethe of Canton, Mich., Matt Daddino of Franklin Square, N.Y., Blane Mayle of Fairmont, W.Va., and Nino Paglia of Strongsville, Ohio.
These athletes join Zac Fryling, the nation's seventh-best recruit according to Intermatwrestle.com who signed in November, as the 2003-04 Mountaineer recruiting class. This class is ranked 13th in the nation, according to Intermatwrestle.com. This is the third time in the last four years that WVU's class has been ranked among the top 15 in the nation.
Grogg was a standout wrestler at Parkersburg South where he claimed the 2003 state championship. He also finished second and third at the state tournament in his career. Grogg is ranked nationally as the 10th-best senior at 125 pounds by Intermatwrestle.com. He will likely compete at 133 for WVU.
Barrentine earned numerous honors while competing at Dayton Carroll High. In 2003, he won the Ohio state championship as a heavyweight and finished third at high school nationals. During his prep career, Barrentine also finished second and third at the state tournament. He is ranked as the fourth-best senior in the nation at heavyweight by Intermatwrestle.com.
Clarke comes to West Virginia after three seasons at Princeton. The transfer is a two-time place winner in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). Clarke was a first team all-Ivy selection in 2001 and an honorable mention in 2003 after posting a 17-13 record. He was also an NWCA Academic All-American honorable mention in 2003. Clarke will have one year of eligibility and should compete for a spot at 141 this season for West Virginia.
Goethe posted a 158-43 record and won a state title as a senior at Salem High. He was also a four-year letterwinner and a three-time all-conference and all-area selection. In addition to winning the state title as a senior, he was also named all-metro and team MVP. Academically, Goethe was an Academic All-American and a Detroit Free Press scholar athlete. He is projected to wrestle at 141 or 149 for the Mountaineers.
Daddino, who will have two years of eligibility at WVU, redshirted last season at Hofstra. In the 2002 season, he went 19-16 at heavyweight, including a perfect 6-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) duals and a third place finish at the CAA tournament. As a freshman in 2001, he was 12-19. Daddino was a high school All-American at Carey High in Franklin Square, N.Y. He will likely compete for a spot at 197.
Mayle won a state championship in his final season at East Fairmont High as he posted a 46-2 record. He is a three-time North Central Athletic Conference (NCAC) champion and placed fourth and fifth in the state his sophomore and junior seasons. He was listed as an honorable mention as one of the top seniors at the 171 weight class by Intermatwrestle.com. Mayle is projected to compete at 174 or 184 at West Virginia.
Paglia was a standout wrestler at Strongsville High where he collected three top five finishes at the Ohio state tournament going fifth, third and second. Paglia will see action at 141 or 149 at WVU.
