Men's Tennis: Rutgers Downs WVU

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men’s tennis team (3-8, 2-0 BIG EAST) beat West Virginia (8-10, 0-2 BIG EAST), 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Rutgers University Tennis Complex in Piscataway, NJ. After falling in all three doubles matches, the Scarlet Knights won all six single matches to earn the team victory.
At No. 1 singles, senior Greg Schweitzer defeated West Virginia’s Eric Kochanski by a score of 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to earn Rutgers their first point in the match. Senior Kevin Bielen followed Schweitzer’s victory with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Tony Epkey at the No. 2 singles spot. At the third singles position, senior Maarten Vissers won his match, 6-1, 6-4, over Ian Bliss.
The fourth consecutive Rutgers point came from freshman Gordie Milchutsky, who won his match, 6-2, 6-4, over J.R. Randall. Rutgers swept all the singles points when both senior Brook Deming and freshman Tyler Deming won their matches. Brook won his match at the fifth singles spot, 6-0, 6-3, over Kyle Markham. At No. 6 singles, Tyler won his match, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5), over Chris Green.
The No. 1 doubles team of Schweitzer and Brook Deming lost their match to the team of Bliss and Epkey, 8-3. The second team of Bielen and Vissers followed up with an 8-6 loss to West Virginia’s Kochanski and Green. Tyler Deming and Milchutsky could not prevent the sweep as they lost, 8-3, to the team of Randall and Markham.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m., to face Boston College at the Rutgers University Tennis Complex.
