MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior linebacker Grant Wiley named to The Sporting News All-American football team, it was announced today.
Wiley, a Trappe, Pa., native, finished the regular season with a team-high 158 tackles, 14.5 tackles for losses and seven forced fumbles to go with two interceptions and a sack. Wiley is the school’s all-time leader in tackles for losses and needs just two tackles to top Darryl Talley’s school-record total of 484 tackles produced from 1979-82. Talley was a consensus All-American pick in 1982.
Wiley, a Nagurski Award finalist as the nation’s top defensive player, was also named to the Football Writers Association and Southern Football Weekly All-American teams.
Joining Wiley on the Sporting News All-American first team from the Big East include Pitt wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Miami tight end Kellen Winslow, Virginia Tech center Jake Grove, Virginia Tech running back Kevin Jones and Miami defensive back Sean Taylor.
Meanwhile, freshman offensive guard Dan Mozes was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-American second team. The Washington, Pa., native started all 12 games and helped the Mountaineers rank among the nation’s top 15 rushing offenses this season.
