Swimming: WVU Finishes Third at ND Meet

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The WVU men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned third-place finishes on the final day of the Notre Dame Invitational, Saturday evening, at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
The men tallied 1,092 points to finish behind Harvard and Notre Dame while the women's team scored 843 points to place third behind Bowling Green and Notre Dame.
For the women's team, the 400 freestyle relay squad of Livia Cascao, Manuela Trabert, Megan Carlson and Lee Ann Johnston stopped the clock at 3:32.68 to place second in the event.
Sophomore Ashley Bissett earned a fourth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a 17:37.10 while Johnston swam a 52.68 to place fourth in the 100 free. Freshman Jennifer Nyce was the squad's highest placing diver as she scored 143.75 on the one-meter boards to place 27th overall.
Senior Kleyton Franca led the way for the Mountaineer men once again, earning a victory in the 100 freestyle event (45.33). Junior Pedro Pinto was also victorious for West Virginia, placing first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.13.
WVU's Can Eter notched a 2:06.73 in the 200 breaststroke which was good for a third-place finish.
The relay team of Franca, Kyle Gallo, Chris Hagedorn and Matt Drozd placed second in the 400 freestyle relay event with a time of 3:03.39.
Teams that competed in the three-day Notre Dame Invitational were Denison, Denver, Harvard, Indianapolis, Louisville, North Dakota, Notre Dame, St. Louis, Shippensburg, West Virginia and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (divers only).
The Mountaineers will now travel to Mission Viejo, Calif., from Dec. 13-23, for their annual winter training trip. The squad will return to action on Jan. 9 for a dual meet against Duquesne, at 5 p.m., at the WVU Natatorium.
