NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The WVU swimming and diving team notched several outstanding performances through day two of competition at the three-day Notre Dame Invitational meet held in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
For the men's team, senior all-BIG EAST freestyler Kleyton Franca earned the Mountaineers' lone first place finish on Friday with a 1:39.76 in the 200 free event.
Junior Pedro Pinto stopped the clocks at 49.42 to place third in the 100 butterfly while diver Ryan Faught scored a 352.05 on the three-meter boards for West Virginia.
Day one of the competition on Thursday saw the men's 200 freestyle relay team of Chris Hagedorn, Kyle Williams, Franca and Matt Drozd come up one-quarter of a second short of Notre Dame with a 1:22.66 to place second in the event.
Drozd and Hagedorn placed first and second, respectively, in the 50 freestyle, with Drozd earning the victory with a 20.55 time
On the women's side, senior captain Lee Ann Johnston continued to swim exceptionally with a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke event (58.72) on Friday.
Ashley Bissett swam a 4:36.04 in the 400 individual medley to place fourth.
Johnston led a charged women's team in day one of competition on Thursday, anchoring the 200 free relay team that included Livia Cascao, Manuela Trabert and Olga Tzinker to a first-place finish (1:37.52). She also claimed first place in the 50 free with a 24.32, besting her first-place preliminary time by one-tenth of a second.
Teams that are competing in the Notre Dame Invitational are Denison, Denver, Harvard, Indianapolis, Louisville, North Dakota, Notre Dame, St. Louis, Shippensburg, West Virginia and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (divers only).
The Mountaineers wrap up the meet on Saturday, Dec. 6, beginning with the preliminary round at 10 a.m. Final team scores will be released following the conclusion of the finals in the afternoon.
