MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University women's track team will open the 2003-04 indoor season with the WVU Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the WVU Shell Building.
The Mountaineers return several regional and national qualifiers from a year ago and welcome one of the best recruiting classes the Mountaineers have had since coach Jeff Huntoon took over the reigns of the program three years ago.
"We have a great influx of freshman that will add a lot of depth to our team," Huntoon says. "The newcomers are the most organized and fit group I have ever seen come in here in 13 years, men or women."
Goal-wise, the Mountaineers feel that they have an opportunity in 2004 to build themselves into one of the top women's programs in the nation.
"As far as indoor track goes, I feel we have an opportunity to finish in the top 20 nationally," Huntoon states. "We have a chance to get some national qualifiers there and hopefully come out with a few All-Americans."
Huntoon feels the strength of this year's team lies in its athletic ability and positive attitude, two attributes that will help spell success for many years to come.
"It's an exciting and fit group that is very goal oriented," he explains. "As a coaching staff we will try to put them in the right events and see what happens."
Teams participating in the 2003 Holiday Classic include Duquesne, Robert Morris, Bowie State, Concord College, Marshall and West Liberty State. Saturday's field events are set to get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the track events beginning at 12:30 p.m.
