MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team travels to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the 41st Midlands Wrestling Championships hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Mountaineers will go head-to-head with the country’s best wrestlers. Twelve of the Top 25 wrestling programs in the country, including Top-ranked Iowa, are scheduled to compete.
WVU grapplers earning seeds for the 41st tournament include Matt Lebe (157), Greg Jones (184) and Brent Miller (HWT).
Lebe has been West Virginia’s most productive wrestler this season. The sophomore leads WVU in victories with a 14-2 record and is seeded eighth.
Jones, who has yet to see action this season, secures the No. 1 seed at 184-pounds. Miller, competing in just his second event of the year, comes in ranked ninth at heavyweight.
"The high caliber of teams at the 41st Midlands should make for another year in which we have outstanding competition," said tournament director Ken Kraft. "This is why the Midlands is looked upon by people across the country as the highlight of wrestling tournaments."
Also making the trip to the prestigious Midlands for West Virginia are Seth Lisa (133) and Joe Clarke (141).
Session 1 starts at 9:30a.m. CST on Monday, while Session 3 kicks off Tuesday’s action at noon. For ticket information, call the Northwestern Ticket Office at (847) 491-CATS.
West Virginia will travel with a partial squad to the Midlands before next competing at the Sun Devil Duals in Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 4, 2004.
