“We were not surprised by anything they were doing. They are a very, very talented team and it’s no surprise for our coaching staff how good they were,” said West Virginia coach John Beilein. “Our kids tried hard but they were the better team tonight without question.”
West Virginia led 40-35 at halftime and held a 72-71 lead with 6:34 left on a three-pointer by Tyrone Sally, but Northeastern went on a 11-0 run in a span of two minutes to take a 10-point lead at 82-72. The closest West Virginia could get was five at 83-78 before Barnes hit another three with 1:13 left.
Northeastern (2-2) dominated West Virginia on the boards, pulling down 49 rebounds to WVU’s 34.
Northeastern shot 43.1 percent from the floor but hit 13 of 25 from three-point range for 52 percent. WVU shot 31 of 59 overall but hit just nine of 23 from three-point distance for 39.1 percent.
“It was an honor to come back into the Coliseum and play and I thank everybody that is affiliated with Mountaineer athletics to come back here. For me that’s big because growing up in Fairmont I’ve probably seen more games here than anybody playing on their basketball team or coaching staff during my lifetime. It’s almost hard to stand up here after winning a basketball game because it’s a sacred thing in my family,” said Northeastern coach Ron Everhart, who grew up in Fairmont.
Drew Schifino led the Mountaineers with 20 points, followed by 18 from Tyrone Sally and 14 off the bench from Patrick Beilein.
West Virginia has a short turnaround playing St. Louis Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Charleston. That game will tipoff at 7 pm.
