MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team (4-10-3) fell to No. 9 St. John's 2-1 after the Red Storm scored a goal in the 87th minute to escape with a win on Saturday, Nov. 1.
St. John's jumped out to a first half lead in the 23rd minute when senior Chris Wingert headed a ball served off of a corner from teammate Simone Salinno past WVU goalkeeper Nick Noble.
The Mountaineers would not back down despite being out-shot 6-0 in the first half by the Red Storm. Noble was forced to make three saves in the first half of action.
WVU would take advantage of their limited chances in the second half as Albert Smith dribbled down the field to the top of the goal box where he found freshman Jarrod Smith open. The Havelock, New Zealand, native wasted little time with the ball as he turned towards the goal and fired his seventh goal of the season past St. John's goalkeeper Bill Gaudette. The goal marked the only shot the Red Storm defense would allow al game.
Just as the game seemed as if it were headed to overtime the Red Storm interrupted those thoughts with less than four minutes remaining. Wingert knocked a free kick to freshman Ashley Kozicki who blasted his shot home.
St. John's recorded 16 shots in the match compared to the Mountaineers one. The Red Storm kept the pressure on the WVU defense by forcing eight corner kicks.
The Mountaineers will close out the 2003 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 2, when they face Marshall in Charleston, W.Va. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
