Swimming: WVU Competes at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Kleyton Franca won three events to lead the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team to a 2-0 record on Saturday afternoon in its season opener against Oakland, Akron and Wayne State.
The Mountaineer men defeated host Oakland (130-113) and Wayne State (174-67). The WVU women dropped decisions to Oakland (90-153) and Akron (94-149) but downed Wayne State (196-45).
Franca, a senior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, took first place honors in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:42.39), 200-yard freestyle (1:41.88) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.77).
Travis Watson claimed top honors in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.92, while Ryan Faught took first-place in the 1-meter dive (204.30) and Brian Donahue won the 3-meter dive (200.10).
For the women, Ashley Bissett finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:28.73 and Julia Warnken was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.18.
Both the WVU men and women return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 1, traveling to Rutgers for a Big East meet.
