Volleyball: West Virginia Wins in Five

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Kelly Mullins slammed 21 kills with 11 digs to lead the WVU volleyball team (5-14) over Youngstown State (8-11) in a five-game thriller, 30-15, 26-30, 26-30, 30-21, 13-15, on Saturday afternoon in Beeghly Center.
It was the second straight victory for the Mountaineers and marked the second consecutive match with a double-double for Mullins.
The Penguins won game won, 30-15, forcing the Mountaineers to commit 12 hitting errors.
The Mountaineer charged back to win games two and three, 30-26, and 30-26, to take a two game to one lead. Alison Zemanski, who finished with 21 kills and a .273 hitting percentage, pounded seven kills in game two and six in game three to lead West Virginia. The Mountaineers hit .409 in game two with 23 team kills.
Youngstown State rallied to tie the match, 2-2, after winning game four, 30-21. The Penguins took advantage of a poor West Virginia offensive effort as they committed 11 hitting errors and a .071 hitting percentage.
In game five, West Virginia hit .360 as a team while Zemanski led the Mountaineers with four kills. In the final game, YSU committed four blocking errors to help WVU to victory.
For YSU, Colleen Royer pounded 21 kills, collected 14 digs and four blocks and recorded a .314 hitting percentage while Annie Buschur recorded 15 kills with eight blocks.
WVU senior outside hitter Dimitra Havriluk tallied a double-double with 19 kills and 21 digs and Julie Hockenson added 16 kills.
The Mountaineers return to action for a non-conference road match at Robert Morris on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
